The Brussels company is lending the five-channel mixer to venues and schools first. Sales are planned for 2027, and there is no price yet.
Brussels-based music technology company Ambrio showed its Spatial Performance Mixer in public for the first time at ADE on Friday, Oct 23, Resident Advisor reports. The mixer lets a DJ place sounds around a room and move them in real time. Ambrio plans to start selling it in 2027. It has not announced a price.
The ADE showcase
The debut took place at the Currents – Configuration II party at Loods6 in Amsterdam, according to RA. Wata Igarashi, Nadia Struiwigh, State OFFF, Zohar and OK EG played. Ambrio followed up with two free public masterclasses at Loods6 on Saturday, Oct 24, according to RA’s event listing. The first session ran from 13:00 to 13:40 Amsterdam time. The second ran from 16:10 to 17:00.
The showcase was not the first news of the product. Ambrio announced the Spatial Performance Mixer on Oct 20, as MusicTech and Sonic State reported at the time.
How the Spatial Performance Mixer works
The SPM is a standalone mixer with five channels, according to RA, MusicTech and Sonic State. Each channel has trim, a four-band EQ, a high-pass and low-pass filter, and cue. Each one also has its own 360-degree positioning. With it, a performer can place a sound anywhere in the room. The sound can then move in different shapes and at different speeds.
Other features include spatial delay and reverb, booth monitoring and a one-touch reset. The mixer works with any brand of speaker but needs at least four. It supports up to 8.1 analogue outputs or 32 channels of networked audio. Ambrio says a custom algorithm adapts stereo material to any speaker layout.
Control moves to the booth
Co-founder and technical lead Ulrik Van Hecke explained the idea to MusicTech. “Most spatial systems ask the performer to plan spatial effects and placement in advance and hand them to someone else to run,” he said. He added: “We wanted to put that control in the hands of the artist.”
You cannot buy one yet. Through an Incubator Programme, Ambrio is lending the Spatial Performance Mixer to venues, collectives and academic institutions. Commercial sale is planned for 2027.
What we don’t know yet
If the design works as described, DJs could shape a spatial mix live on a club’s existing speakers. That could open spatial sound to rooms without a custom system. Several questions remain open, though. Ambrio has not given a price or a release month. No source we found describes how the mixer sounds in rooms of different sizes. Ambrio has also not said which venues have joined the loan programme. BEZ has not tested the mixer.
